In an interview with CNBC on Friday, SUKU CEO Yonathan Lapchik discussed the Bitcoin mining scene related to renewable energy. He explained that 75% of all bitcoin miners are powered by clean and sustainable sources such as hydroelectric power or wind farms in some parts of China like Inner Mongolia.
“We think that 75% is an actual figure,” Lapchik told CNBC. ‘The miners are truly incentivized to use renewable energy.” Turning his thoughts to electric car-maker Tesla, which recently announced it would no longer accept Bitcoin for purchases due to environmental concerns, Lapchik said, “It’s surprising that Elon didn’t consider before getting into the space and accepting Bitcoin as a payment mechanism for Tesla.”
Tesla Motors is known for pushing the envelope when it comes to innovation in vehicles. Now, they are following suit with their own payment system and opening up a shop on a cryptocurrency frontier that has yet seen few entrants: bitcoin payments. Tesla opened up this new feature back in March of this year. This week, Elon Musk has decided to refocus Tesla’s cryptocurrency payments by discontinuing all BTC transactions. He is also fighting against Bitcoin mining which he deems inefficient and wasteful of fossil fuels.
